When in Texas

Jun 19 2015
Every fall Friday in Texas, communities big and small across the state gather for an experience common in America, but unique in the Lone Star State: high school football. I wanted to get to the heart of a 100-year-old culture which has been drenched in myth, so I spent each week of the 2014 season traveling throughout Texas to photograph the people and places that set Texas football apart. Beyond the movies and TV shows, enormous stadiums and other cliches, I found communities throwing their full support behind the kids in their towns and schools. The deep connections between players, schools and fans brought a heightened meaning to every game, as if each snap tightened the social fabric of communities big and small, ensuring the ritual’s repetition for generations to come.
