His F****** City

PETE SOUZA/THE PLAYERS' TRIBUNE

Prior to the Red Sox’ 34th home game of the 2017 season, the team recognized three-time World Series champion David Ortiz by retiring his number 34, making him only the 10th player in the franchise’s history to receive that honor. Pete Souza, who was the official White House photographer during the presidency of Barack Obama, went behind the scenes in Boston for The Players’ Tribune to capture some highlights from the festivities — which included the city renaming a street near Fenway Park in Ortiz’s honor, a celebrity roast of the big man, and his impromptu appearance at a store near the ballpark. It was clear that, even though he is retired, Boston remains Big Papi’s town.
