Threads Report: Kenny Stills

At The Players’ Tribune, we know it’s not just what you do on the field, but what you wear off of it. That’s why we’re introducing Threads Report, a new series where we ask our contributors to look inside their closets, suitcases, lockers and whatever else — and share 10 items they’ve had in heavy rotation.

Kicking things off with Threads Report #1 is Dolphins wide receiver (and proud California boy) Kenny Stills.

1. Fanny pack

I love my fanny pack. I’ve been rocking it since I got it at Mardi Gras, in February. Here’s the thing: If you don’t have a fanny pack, you need one. Actually, stop reading this, go buy a fanny pack, and then come back and finish. (Did you get one? Okay, great.) Basically, my fanny pack keeps my life together. I haven’t lost any money or my license, or credit cards, or anything, since I’ve started wearing it. I’ve always got ChapStick. I’ve always got gum on me. And anything else I want to keep in there. In short, it’s just awesome.

2. Short-sleeve hoodies

I love all things hooded. My hair is crazy, so it’s really easy to notice me in public. Wearing a hood gets me back in my comfort zone.

3. Old school Vans

I’m a California boy, so I will go anywhere in my Vans. I don’t really dress up a lot but I’ll wear a suit and wear Vans, no problem. It’s funny, I probably have 500 pairs of shoes — all these sneakers or whatever that I’ve collected — but when push comes to shove, I always end up wearing the same two or three pairs.

4. Bear onesie

One of my favorite things I own. You have to see it to believe it — it’s this onesie, styled like a bear, with ears and everything. I had it handmade for me by one of my best friends. Hopefully, one day, I’ll have the confidence where I can wear it outside. But until then, if it’s cold around the house, I’ll put it on, throw the hood on, and fucking, just, rock it. It’s cool, man.

5. My favorite shirt

Just a black LRG t-shirt — really simple, little front pocket, nothing extra. Like any favorite shirt, it knows not to shrink.

6. All-red Yeezys

They’re pretty expensive but I got them for retail. I wouldn’t say they’re “special occasion” shoes, but I’ve gotta be, you know, feeling myself a little, having a good day, to throw those on.

7. Overalls from China

These skinny jean overalls barely fit me — like, barely barely — but I don’t care. I love overalls in general. I think it’s really cool that we’re bringing those back.

8. Extra space

I have extra closet space where most people would put their boxers and socks because I don’t really own any. Around two or three years ago, I just decided that, “Man, these things suck and they’re uncomfortable, and I’d much rather not wear them.” And that was that. I haven’t since. Don’t like’em, don’t want’em, don’t need’em.

9. My favorite jacket

This jacket is made by Feathers, which is probably my favorite brand right now. It’s really long, almost to my knees, but with short sleeves, and zippers on the top and the bottom — like, kind of Kanye West style. I like to keep it fashion-y, but I like to keep it simple. It’s a fine line.

10. Chicago Bulls SnapBack

You know the one. New Era — black with the red bill. I’m not even a Bulls fan; I just love that hat. I usually don’t wear a lot of colors, but that black and red is so classic, it goes with anything. When I was playing for the Saints, I actually got into a little bit of trouble over it — not big trouble, but just, you know … I wore my Bulls snapback one time and they wanted to know why I didn’t have a Pelicans hat on. I was like, “When you make one in red and black, let me know.”
